The Friend with Benefits

One of the first people I met when I was going to UT was a Navy ROTC guy, much later to become a friend with benefits (FWB), who was in one of my classes. We shared similar tastes in music and film, and we possessed a nearly identical wit. Our chats online were long and hilarious.

FWB and a couple of his friends and I would meet every week at a restaurant near campus and listen to the band that played there. The same group of friends and I would also attend music shows and other campus events together. After a year or two, though, FWB and one of his friends quit hanging out at the restaurant, which took the fun out of it, so I quit going as well.

Toward the beginning of our friendship, I nursed a small crush on FWB. Between my relationship with the Republican and his own relationship, though, nothing happened. His own relationship later turned into an engagement, whose demise I prophesied secretly. I was sorry for him when it didn't work out, and sorrier still when he dropped out of UT. He enrolled in San Jacinto College in Pasadena in southeast Houston to complete his studies, and I wound up running into him when I later graduated and moved back to Houston.

At this point, this story segues into its post-college continuation.
