Herbs

Herbs are so easy to grow, not to mention incredibly useful and versatile. If I didn't love home grown tomatoes and squash so much, I'd grow nothing but herbs in my garden. Like I said, they're the easiest things to grow, and they don't even require a full size garden. Since they can easily be grown in pots, herbs are perfect for difficult climates or small apartments without a yard. I chose to grow my herbs in window boxes rather than in the ground so I could move them indoors come the winter and still reap the benefits.

Herbs are the best start for a beginning gardener since they're small and low maintenance. Just fill a pot with potting soil, plant the seeds, and keep the soil moist. The only important thing is to make sure they don't get too much or too little water, and keep bugs off them. Give them a little plant food and repot them every year, if they last that long—I tend to just plant new ones after exhausting a crop.

I grow dill, basil, and cilantro. Occasionally I plant mint, thyme, or oregano; but the first three get the most use, particularly basil. I have a full window box full of basil, and the dill and cilantro share another window box. The dill is pictured below.
