Bathroom

Bathroom wall shelf

The bathroom, the smallest room in the house, is ironically the room into which I put the most effort decorating. I find that the bathroom, being the place where I make myself presentable, is more inspiring when it itself is presentable. Thusly, I expended a lot of energy into making it pretty without being overpowering. Much of my childhood was plagued with mismatched towels or towels in a color I didn't like: When I was about eight, my aunt bought me some pink towels and girly accessories, which I was relieved to get rid of (I dislike pink) in middle school, only she bought me more girly accessories, complete with lace accents. I got rid of them a few years later, and eventually I found the dark green towels of my dreams and bought them. I based the redecoration of my bathroom around my dark green towels, and I bought dark green bath mats and a complementing ivory sateen shower curtain hung on S-shaped bronze hooks. I hung a bronze shelf on the wall, which holds the more decorative of my bathroom articles, and I stored all my less aesthetically pleasing bathroom articles under the sink.

For your own bathroom, choose a theme which matches or complements the rest of the house. Towels and bath mats are the primary items to consider, but accessories such as soap dishes, toothbrush holders, and waste baskets are key as well. Soap dishes should complement the rest of the bathroom as well as the rest of the house. I prefer to match by basic style rather than color; it breaks up monotony yet still matches.

Store as much as possible in cabinets or under the sink in coordinating bins or baskets. If you have room, store everything out of sight; it will keep the bathroom looking tidy and easy to clean. If you lack the space, though, keep only the prettier bottles on display. You can invest in cheap shelving, apothecary jars, or matching bins to help you.
