Home Decor Tips

The key to home decor is coordination. Select your favorite colors, and base your furniture and decorative items around that. The colors should be soothing yet energizing, colors to make you smile. My favorite color is dark green, so my house has lots of dark green in it. I've coordinated it primarily with brown, such as the wood of the furniture or bronze and ivory accents. My decorative items tend to be made of wood or metal in colors that complement the furniture.

Try to keep linens--curtains, sheets, towels, shower curtains, and carpets--all within the same color palette. Don't match them exactly; that will look monotonous. Instead go for slight variations, or pick an accent of one piece and use it as the main color in another.

Rugs should tie a room together. Use a rug to connect two complementing pieces of furniture rather than just having the rug in the middle of the room.

Use small touches throughout the house to maintain a theme. Apart from matching linens, I use sea grass baskets in a few different rooms to stay organized. I also have two of the same rug, one in my bedroom and one in my computer room.

I have nautical art throughout the house as well: My late grandmother painted several seascapes, which hang throughout the house, plus I have some decorative seashells and driftwood in several rooms. I also have a small clock shaped like a ship's wheel on my computer room wall. Related art helps keep the feel of every room the same, while the remaining furnishings lend each room its own personality. If you prefer different art styles, try flowing gradually from one room to the next to keep your home feeling connected.
