Bathroom

Like all the rooms in my house, my bathroom is fairly small. It took a long time to find an organizational system that worked. Now, though, even if I had a bathroom twice the size, I'd probably still stick to roughly what I have now since it's clutter free.

Cleaning:

  • Clean the bathroom once a week, more often if needed, or if more than one person uses it. Scrub the tub, sink, and toilet; and wipe down the mirror, counter, toilet tank, any shelves, and the floor.
  • Keep a laundry basket in the bathroom or, if that's not possible, as nearby as you can. Make sure all your dirty clothes and towels wind up in it.

Organization:

  • Get rid of anything you don't use regularly, even if it was expensive. This goes for fancy soaps, creams, lotions, hair accessories, anything. They take up space, never get used, and will inevitably go to waste anyway.
  • Use your cabinets to their full extent. I have one cabinet under the sink, which holds a couple of small baskets I use to sort smaller items. On the left, there is a stacking shelf which holds items used daily such as deodorant, facial scrub, and toner. In the middle is a basket with small compartments which house various hair accessories. On the right are two stacking drawers; the bottom one holds spare cans of shaving gel and tubes toothpaste, etc.; the top one holds my hair dryer and curling iron.

  • On the top of the toilet, I keep a small square cookie tin full of very small items, such as my nail clippers, cuticle pusher, etc. It's opaque and decorative, so I don't mind it being in the open.
  • On the wall opposite the toilet, I hung two small shelves with a towel rack underneath. I hang my bath towel on the rack; I place perfumes and an apothecary jar on the bottom shelf; and on the top shelf I store a jar of Epsom salts and a cruet of bubble bath.

  • I sometimes keep a book or notebook next to the cookie tin on the toilet tank, but if you choose to do the same, don't allow books to collect and clutter the area.
  • I have two hooks on the back of my bathroom door. The left one holds my robe and nightgown; the right one holds my exercise clothes since I usually exercise in the morning before getting dressed.
