My garage is not a neat area of the house. We have a small house, and my dad keeps many tools. He tends to overflow tools and projects into the living room and leave them there, whereupon I remove them and place them back in the garage. This cycle is repeated every few weeks (to the tune of much bitching), though I can't say I care all that much since it means at least my living room is presentable. However, I have over the years learned how to sort the garage.
Cleaning:
- Every few months, take a yard brush and sweep out the garage.
- Along with sweeping the floor, you may wish to run a rag over any dusty shelving.
Organization:
- If, like many people, you don't actually store your car in the garage but rather use it for boxes and power tools, etc., then you may have large piles of disorganized boxes. Discard items you haven't used in years.
- Sort the remaining items into different sections of the garage. For instance, store tools in one area, paint in another, automotive articles in another, etc. If you can move the less used items (such as Christmas decorations) into attic space, do so.
- Keep clear pathways between the different areas of the garage so you don't have to climb over things to reach one area.
- Invest in a large tool chest if you have a lot of tools.
- Use large storage bins, crates, etc. to hold tools that don't fit anywhere else, taking care to keep them organized within the bin.
- Install wall hooks to hang cords or some tools on.
