Some people should really not be allowed to knit. Or, in this case, crochet.
This globe, whose image has surfaced on various websites but whose origins remain a mystery, is possibly the worst knitted thing I've seen yet (with the exception of the Bella womb for sheer creepiness). This globe is stupid, but at least it's not creepy. I should point out that, though this globe is consistently labeled "knitted," it is in fact crocheted. You can tell by looking at the stitches. People who don't know fiber arts shouldn't label them. Or make them. I'll ignore the fact that the globe hasn't been stuffed properly. There are far worse problems with this globe than its non-globe shape. The most immediate problems have less to do with knitting than geography. For starters, Europe is not shaped even remotely like that. I couldn't find the familiar shapes of Spain and Italy, and the UK is absent entirely. Turkey, Russia, India, and China are not continents. Who the fuck labeled this thing? You should not label a random mix of both countries and continents, at least not in the same size letters. Also, Turkey isn't even in the right place, so far as I can tell on the amorphous blob meant to represent Eurasia. The continent of Asia should be stretched out a bit, or else the southeastern part of Europe should be smaller. Also, India isn't shaped like thatThe southern tip of the country comes to a point, which is easy enough to knit. Africa should be considerably farther north, plus the northern coast should be more jagged. I realize that's harder to knit, but for God's sake, if you're going to knit a globe, be willing to put forth the effort, especially since it's not even that much effort. Also, the North Pole is missing, and I'd be willing to bet that Antarctica is absent as well. I understand that there wouldn't have been much point in adding many smaller islands, but the knitter really should have included Madagascar and made some effort on southeast Asia. Those little islands could have been sewn on in duplicate stitch later. The same goes for several missing seas (Black, Caspian, and Red, off the top of my head). I tremble to think what happened to Australia and Japan. The Equator is not sewn on right: It should cover the land as well as the water. I can't see most of the Americas on the globe, which is just as well since the hemisphere we can see is bad enough. The Americas would arguably be less difficult to knit since there are fewer islands, but I'm certain that Florida, New England, and the Great Lakes are all a confused blob just like most of northern Canada. It's probably even uglier than the side of the globe we can see. It stands to reason since people tend to photograph the more attractive angles of their work. What gets me is that on at least one website, this globe was labeled "lovely." Perhaps to the blind. The point is, you shouldn't knit something which will require detailed work if you're not willing to put forth the effort.
