Dom's Blanket

Skill Level:
Intermediate

Materials:
Needles: 29" #19 circular needle
Yarn: 12 skeins white, bulky weight yarn
4 skeins black, bulky weight yarn

Gauge:
2 stitches per inch
2 rows per inch

Stitch Explanation:
K—Knit
P—Purl
st(s)—stitch(es)
RS—Right side
WS—Wrong side

Note:

This pattern is worked with two strands of yarn held together. (You will work with four skeins of yarn—two black, two white—throughout.)

Pattern:

Cast on 117 sts with white. (Increase or decrease the number of sts in multiples of 10 for a larger or smaller blanket.)

The blanket has a border of garter stitch and stockinette stitch inside that.

Work garter stitch for 7 rows. Then work 3 rows of stockinette stitch with a garter stitch border as follows:

Row 1: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.
Row 2: K across.
Row 3: K3, P to last 3 sts, K3.

Then begin the pattern (remembering to strand black yarn across the back), working the garter and stockinette border as follows:

RS row: K6, work pattern, K6.
WS row: K3, P3, work pattern, P3, K3.

There will be nine and a half repeats across. Remember, you're creating a checkerboard pattern. If you get confused, refer to one of the pictures or this sketch of the blanket:

There should be ten plus signs along the bottom edge, nine above that, ten above that, etc., ending with ten plus signs across the top edge.

This is the chart:

The blank squares are knit with white; the filled-in squares are knit with black.

Work until blanket is about sixty-six inches or about six inches less than desired length. Work first five rows of pattern to get one more row of ten plus signs. Break black yarn. With white, work 3 rows of stockinette with garter stitch border as at the beginning. Then work 7 rows of garter stitch and cast off. Weave in loose ends; block.
