Klein Bottle Hat Pattern

Klein Bottle Hat

Skill Level:
Experienced

Materials:
Needles: 16" #8 circular needle
set of 4 #8 double pointed needles
  cable needle
Yarn: 3–4 skeins worsted weight in the color of your choice
Other Materials: at least 1 place marker (one to mark the end of the round; you may wish to use others in a contrasting color to mark your place in the pattern)

Gauge:
Not that important, but if you wish:
~7 stitches per inch
~6 rows per inch

Stitch Explanation:
K—knit
P—purl
st(s)—stitch(es)
inc—increase
dec—decrease
arnd—around
rnd—round
sl—slip
ssk—Sl two sts, one at a time, as if to K. Slide the left needle into the front loop of both sts and K them together.
K2tog—knit two together

About the Pattern:

Tip: Try to weave in loose ends as you go since the closed nature of the hat makes it most difficult to do so afterwards. I found this out the hard way.

The construction of the hat is basically a tube that widens in the middle and then narrows again; it looks something like two funnels stuck together at the wide bit. There is a hole in the side of the wide part through which the narrow ends join. The tricky part is that when you pull one of the narrow ends through the hole to join the other end, you pull it inside out. That is, the outside of one end is attached to the inside of the other end. I thought it sounded impossible, but it was quite simple really. The end result is a lot like double knitting in that you have two layers, one inside the other. After the hell that was the Moebius scarf (the sheer audacity of that scarf in insisting on not being knit was nothing short of astonishing, really), it was almost embarrassingly simple. Then again, I had a hell of a time with the increases and decreases on this hat, so I guess it all evens out in the end.

I made this hat with a pattern of figure eights (like on the Moebius scarf) and infinity signs. The narrow part of the tube begins with only two figure eights, one on each side of the tube, as it were (one right side facing and one reversed). Then the diameter increases, with knit one, purl one rib interspersed with infinity signs. The widest part of the tube is eight figure eights around. Then it decreases, again with ribbing and infinity signs, before reaching the narrow end with only two figure eights around, as at the beginning.

As with the Moebius scarf, here are the charts. The first is for a right-side figure eight.

Figure eight

And this is the chart for the reverse eight:

Reverse figure eight

Here are both charts together, with the right-facing eight side on the right hand side of the chart:

OMG creating this image sucked so goddam much.

And here are both charts together again, but with the right-facing eight side on the left hand side of the chart:

OMG creating this image sucked so goddam much.

This is the chart for the right-facing infinity sign:

Infinity sign

And this is the chart for the reversed infinity sign:

Reverse infinity sign

Legend for the charts:

I know the font sucks. I'm NOT fixing it.

Pattern:

Before beginning, I should note that although I checked the pattern carefully for errors, there may be problems I haven't spotted. Just be careful and, if you spot what looks like a mistake, use your common sense—although, really, if you're knitting this, you probably don't have any.

First narrow end:

Cast on 20 sts and join, being careful not to twist work. Place marker to indicate end of round. Work two figure eights as given in the larger chart with right-facing eight side on the right hand side of the chart. Then, lengthen the tube by working the larger chart with the right-facing eight on the left hand side of the chart. This creates a checkerboard effect.

Increase Rounds:
Note: Unless otherwise noted, all increases increase two stitches at a time. These should be worked as increase one to the right followed by increase one to the left. Also, every increase stitch includes one stitch already on the needle. E.g., for round 1, you work 9 sts as usual, K1, use the st just knitted for one increase, make the next increase with the next st to be worked, then work that st, and then work the remaining 9 sts as usual.

Now the increase rounds begin. Only the first few rounds are simple; when you begin the infinity signs, there will be an added number of stitches on the needles because of the increases within the infinity sign pattern, but they do not count as true increases since they are decreased within the pattern also. So. Right now you should have 20 sts on the needles. By the end of the increases, you will have 80 sts on the needles.

Figure eight section:

The widest part of the hat, though it has the most stitches on the needles, is arguably the easiest since there are no increases or decreases. However, you do have to leave a hole in the middle. This is easily accomplished by working back and forth on the needles instead of in the rnd and then rejoining the yarn to close the hole.

Work the larger chart with the right-facing figure eight knot on the right hand side four times. (You've begun eight figure eights.)

Now you will begin working the larger chart with the reversed figure eight on the right hand side four times, but only do so in the round for about the first 12 rows. Then, for the next 8 rows, work back and forth on the needles just like you would in flat knitting. (Note: Depending on your gauge, you may wish to work back and forth for more or less rows than those given. I didn't think of that and, as a result, the hole I made in the hat was too big. Oops.) Then rejoin and work in the round as before for the remaining 12 rows.

Work the larger chart with the right-facing figure eight knot on the right hand side four times.

There should now be a checkerboard effect with the three rows of figure eight knots. Now you're ready to start the decrease rounds.

Decrease Rounds:

Now the decrease rounds with ribbing begin. These are the same as the increase rounds, except you start with four infinity signs and work down to two, and, obviously, will decrease the number of stitches on the needles from 80 to 20. The project will start speeding up at this point.

As with the increase rounds, unless otherwise noted, all decreases are worked as two decreases at a time. These should be worked as decrease one to the left followed by decrease one to the right; e.g.; dec 2 is interpreted as K2tog, ssk.)

Second narrow end:

Work two figure eights as given in the larger chart with right-facing eight side on the right hand side of the chart. Then, lengthen the tube by working the larger chart with the right-facing eight on the left hand side of the chart. As with before, this creates a checkerboard effect. Cast off.

Finishing:

Reach through the hole created in the middle and pull the skinny end (where you started knitting) through, turning it inside out. At this point you should have the classic Klein bottle shape but with the ends still not connected. Sew the two narrow ends together, matching the right-facing figure eight of one end to the reversed figure eight on the other end so the checkerboard effect is completed. Now all that remains is to push the larger end material up inside hat as much as possible, and it's complete.
