Diagonal Knot Stitch Hat

Skill Level:
Experienced

Materials:
Needles: #7 straight needles
Yarn: 1 skein Lion Brand Wool-Ease (or other worsted weight) in the color of your choice (not too dark or light, though, otherwise the stitch pattern will not be visible)

Gauge:
~5 stitches per inch
~6 rows per inch

Stitch Explanation:
K—knit
P—purl
st(s)—stitch(es)
sl—slip next stitch
MK—Make knot: Purl 3 together, leave the 3 sts on the left needle. Yarn over. Purl 3 together again through same 3 sts still on left needle.

Note:
The knots in this pattern are essentially little bobbles, so I highly recommend experience working with bobbles. Unlike bobbles, however, the knots increase and decrease stitches in the same row, so you don't need to worry about increasing or decreasing in the following row. I.e., for each knot, you start with 3 sts and wind up with 3 sts all in the same row.

Pattern:
Cast on 108 sts (multiple of 3 sts).

Rows 1, 3, and 5: Sl 1. K to end.
Row 2: Sl 1. MK across till last 2 sts. P2.
Row 4: Sl 1, P1. MK across till last st. P1.
Row 6: Sl 1, P2. MK across till last 3 sts. P3.

Repeat rows 1-6 until hat measures 7 inches; begin decreases.

Decreases:
Row 1: Sl 1. Decrease 18 sts evenly across—90 sts.
Rows 2 and all even rows: Continue knot pattern, shifting sts over accordingly to maintain diagonal pattern.
Row 3: Sl 1. Decrease 18 sts evenly across—72 sts.
Row 5: Sl 1. Decrease 18 sts evenly across—54 sts.
Row 7: Sl 1. Decrease 18 sts evenly across—36 sts.
Row 9: Sl 1. Decrease 18 sts evenly across—18 sts.
Row 11: K2tog across—9 sts.

Cut off long end of yarn and thread it through remaining 9 sts and pull tight. Block; sew seam; weave in all ends.
