Parallelogram Cap with first style of decreases



Skill Level:

Materials:
Needles: #7 double pointed needles or 16" circular
  #8 16" circular (optional)
  #8 double pointed needles
Yarn: 1 skein Lion Brand Wool Ease in the color of your choice
Other Materials: 1 place marker

Gauge:
4.5 stitches per inch
5 rows per inch

Stitch Explanation:
K—knit
P—purl
st(s)—stitch(es)
arnd—around
rnd—round
K2tog—knit two together

Pattern:

With smaller needles, cast on 90 sts. (Increase or decrease the number of sts in multiples of 10 for a larger or smaller cap. Alternatively, you could use a smaller or larger needle size.) Join, being careful not to twist work. Place marker to indicate end of round. Work in garter st for 5 rounds. Switch to larger needles and begin chart.

Work in pattern around till cap measures about 6" from beginning, ending with row 10. Begin decreases.

Decreases:

I decided to post two styles of decreases for this hat. I tried the second style first but didn't like it, so I frogged it and worked the decreases in garter stitch. I've posted both styles of decrease so you can do whichever you like.

First decrease style:

(Change to double pointed needles as needed.)

Rnd 1: (K7, K2tog) around—80 sts.
Rnd 2 and all even rnds: P.
Rnd 3: (K6, K2tog) around—70 sts.
Rnd 5: (K5, K2tog) around—60 sts.
Rnd 7: (K4, K2tog) around—50 sts.
Rnd 9: (K3, K2tog) around—40 sts.
Rnd 11: (K2, K2tog) around—30 sts.
Rnd 13: (K1, K2tog) around—20 sts.
Rnd 15: (K2tog) around—10 sts.

Cut off long end of yarn and thread it through remaining 10 sts and pull tight. Block; weave in all ends.

Second decrease style:

(Change to double pointed needles as needed. Don't forget to continue working in pattern.)
Rnd 1: For the K sts, K2tog, K3. Work P sts in pattern. Repeat around—81 sts.
Rnd 2 and all even rnds: Work in pattern.
Rnd 3: For the P sts, P2tog, P3. Work K sts in pattern. Repeat around—72 sts.
Rnd 5: For the K sts, K2tog, K2. Work P sts in pattern. Repeat around—63 sts.
Rnd 7: For the P sts, P2tog, P2. Work K sts in pattern. Repeat around—54 sts.
Rnd 9: For the K sts, K2tog, K1. Work P sts in pattern. Repeat around—45 sts.
Rnd 11 For the P sts, P2tog, P1. Work K sts in pattern. Repeat around—36 sts.
Rnd 13: For the K sts, K2tog. Work P sts in pattern. Repeat around—27 sts.
Rnd 15: For the P sts, P2tog. Work K sts in pattern. Repeat around—18 sts.
Rnd 17: K2tog around—9 sts.

Cut off long end of yarn and thread it through remaining 9 sts and pull tight. Block; weave in all ends.
