Spiral Striped Stocking Cap Pattern

aka Ralf's Hat Pattern

Ralf's Hat

Materials:
Needles:   #7 straight needles
Yarn:   1 skein Lion Brand Wool-Ease Navy
1 skein Lion Brand Wool-Ease Blue Mist
1 skein Lion Brand Wool-Ease Natural Heather
Other Materials:   Yarn bobs (about 21)

Gauge:
5 stitches per inch
7 rows per inch

Notes:

Wind seven yarn bobs of each of the three colors.  I recommend winding each bob as fully as possible.

This pattern must be worked back and forth unless you wish to strand the yarn all the way across every round.  I preferred to avoid stranding since I didn't want the extra bulk or lack of stretch in the fabric.  If you do go with the stranding method, I recommend adding another 15 or 30 stitches to allow for the loss of stretch.  (The total number of stitches must be a multiple of 15 for the striping pattern to work.)

I recommend weaving in loose ends as you go; otherwise you will be left with around 150 loose ends at the end of the project.

Pattern:

Cast on 90 sts with Navy.

K1, P1 every row for 3 inches (about 20 rows).

Switch to St st and work chart, using one yarn bob for every vertical stripe.  By the end of the first row, you should have 18 bobs all hanging off the needles.

This is the chart I designed for it.

This is the legend to the chart.

This is the chart in color.  I left the symbols in place in case the colors on your monitor or printer are not the same as mine.

With St st, work chart for 10 inches; then begin decreases every 6 rows (while maintaining striping pattern):  At beginning of decrease row, K2tog; K to last 2 sts, ssk. Continue decreasing in this manner, every 6 rows, until 6 sts remain.  Break yarn and weave through remaining sts.

Block; weave in loose ends (I know); and sew seam, taking care to match the stripes (the colors of the stripes will stop matching with the decrease rows) and especial care at top.
