Trellis Rib Cap


Materials:  
Needles:   #7 dpns or 16" circular
  #8 16" circular (optional)
  #8 dpns
Yarn:   1 skein Lion Brand Wool Ease in the color of your choice
Other Materials:   1 place marker

Gauge:
4.5 stitches per inch
5 rows per inch

Stitch Explanation:
CF (Cable Front)—Slip next K st to cable needle and hold in front.  P2.  K1 from cable needle.
CB (Cable Back)—Slip next two P sts to cable needle and hold in back.  K1.  P2 from cable needle.

Pattern:

With smaller needles, cast on 102 sts.  (Increase or decrease the number of sts in multiples of 6 for a larger or smaller cap.  Alternatively, you could use a smaller or larger needle size.)  Join, being careful not to twist work.  Place marker to indicate end of round.
Rnd 1:  P2, (K2, P4) around, K2, P2.
Rnd 2:  Repeat Rnd 1.
Rnd 3:  CB, CF around.  The last st of the last cable will be the first st of the next round; remember to slip the marker accordingly.
Rnd 4:  Work in established rib pattern around.
Rnd 5:  Work in established rib pattern around.
Rnd 6:  CF, CB around.  The last st of the last cable will be the first st of the next round; remember to slip the marker accordingly.
Rnd 7:  Work in established rib pattern around.
Rnd 8:  Work in established rib pattern around.
Rnd 9:  CB, CF around.  The last st of the last cable will be the first st of the next round; remember to slip the marker accordingly.
Rnd 10:  Work in established rib pattern around.
Rnd 11:  Work in established rib pattern around.

Switch to larger needles.  Work in K2P4 rib around till cap measures 7" from beginning.  Begin decreases.

Decreases:
(Change to dpns as needed.)
Rnd 1:  (K2, P2, P2tog) around—86 sts.
Rnd 2 and all even rnds:  K even.
Rnd 3:  (K2, P1, P2tog) around—70 sts.
Rnd 5:  (K2, P2tog) around—54 sts.
Rnd 7:  (K1, K2tog) around—38 sts.
Rnd 9:  (K2tog) around—22 sts.
Rnd 11:  (K2tog) around—11 sts.

Cut off long end of yarn and thread it through remaining 11 sts and pull tight.  Block; weave in all ends.
