Notes:
These instructions are for a medium-sized mitten. To make a smaller or larger size, adjust your needle size accordingly. Don't forget that the length may also vary.
The pattern is the same for both mittens; just make two identical ones.
PATTERN:
Cuff:
Cast on 30 sts evenly over three needles and join, being careful not to twist work. Place marker to indicate end of round. Work K1P1 rib for 3 inches or desired length.
Knit 5 rnds.
Thumb gusset:
Rnd 1: K1, inc 2, K to end of round.
Rnd 2 and all even rnds: K even.
Rnd 3: K1, inc 1, K2, inc 1, K to end of round.
Rnd 5: K1, inc 1, K4, inc 1, K to end of round.
Rnd 7: K1, inc 1, K6, inc 1, K to end of round.
Rnd 9: K1, inc 1, K8, inc 1, K to end of round.
Rnd 11: Place next 11 sts on holder.
Hand:
Cast on 1 st so you have 30 sts total on the double pointed needles. Knit even arnd until, when tried on, the mitten just clears the top of the shortest finger.
Top of Mitten:
(K2, K2tog) arnd23 sts.
Knit 4 rnds even.
Next rnd: (K2, K2tog) around till last 3 sts, K318 sts.
K 1 rnd even.
K2tog around9 sts.
Draw yarn through remaining sts and pull tight. Weave in ends.
Thumb:
Place 11 sts from holder on needle. Pick up 4 sts in cast on row (to close gap). Work the 15 sts of thumb even until thumb is 2 inches long or about half an inch less than required length.
Decrease at top of thumb:
Next rnd: K2tog around.
Next rnd: Work even.
Next rnd: K2tog around.
Draw thread through remaining sts and pull tight. Block; weave in ends.
