Notes:

These instructions are for a size small mitten. To make a smaller or larger size, adjust your needle size accordingly. Don't forget that the length may also vary.

The pattern is the same for both mittens; just make two identical ones.

PATTERN:

Cuff:
Cast on 24 sts evenly over three needles and join, being careful not to twist work. Place marker to indicate end of round. Work K1P1 rib for 2½ inches or desired length.
Knit 5 rnds.

Thumb gusset:
Rnd 1: K1, inc 2, K to end of round.
Rnd 2 and all even rnds: K even.
Rnd 3: K1, inc 1, K2, inc 1, K to end of round.
Rnd 5: K1, inc 1, K4, inc 1, K to end of round.
Rnd 7: K1, inc 1, K6, inc 1, K to end of round.
Rnd 9: Place next 9 sts on holder.

Hand:
Cast on 1 st so you again have 24 sts total on the double pointed needles. Knit even arnd until, when tried on, the mitten just clears the top of the shortest finger.

Top of Mitten:
(K2, K2tog) arnd—18 sts.
Knit 4 rnds even.
Next rnd: (K1, K2tog) arnd—12 sts.
K 1 rnd even.
K2tog around—6 sts.
Draw yarn through remaining sts and pull tight. Weave in ends.

Thumb:
Place 9 sts from holder on needle. Pick up 3 sts in cast on row (to close gap). Work the 12 sts of thumb even until thumb is 2 inches long or about half an inch less than required length.
Decrease at top of thumb:
Next rnd: K2tog around.
Next rnd: Work even.
Next rnd: K2tog around.
Draw thread through remaining sts and pull tight. Block; weave in ends.
