  at least 2 stitch holders

K—knit
st(s)—stitch(es)
St st—stockinette stitch
arnd—around
rnd—round
K2tog—knit two together

Pattern:

Cast on 50 sts using a provisional cast on. Join, being careful not to twist work. Place marker to indicate end of round. Work in stockinette stitch till scarf measures five feet or desired length. Break yarn (leaving a long tail), but do not cast off.

Kermit Fringe:

Move first 5 sts of the round to an empty dpn. Move next 40 sts to stitch holder. Move last 5 sts of the round to one dpn.
Divide the 10 sts evenly over three double pointed needles, join, and work in St st for two rounds.
Rnd 1: (K1, K2 tog), K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1.
Rnd 2: Work even.

Work rnds 1 and 2 till there are 2 sts left. Work in I-cord with these 2 sts for 2 rounds. Cast off.

From the stitch holder, move the next 6 sts from one end and the last 6 sts from the other end (they should be opposite each other if the scarf lays flat). Work another piece of fringe as above.

Repeat for the remaining sts. You should wind up with 5 pieces of fringe.

Repeat for the other end of the scarf, undoing your provisional cast on. Block; weave in all ends.
