Notes:

This cardigan was designed to resemble the loose-fitting cardigan Kurt Cobain wore on MTV Unplugged (an acoustic performance taped at Sony Music Studios in New York City on November 18, 1993 for the television series MTV Unplugged). His cardigan was a slightly darker shade than I was able to find (in an affordable, machine washable yarn, at least), plus I couldn't tell if his cardigan zipped or buttoned closed. I think it zips, but since buttons are easier to work into knitting than zippers, I decided to use a button band for this cardigan. You may certainly adjust the pattern for a zipper if you wish.

These instructions are for a man's cardigan. If you want to make a woman's cardigan, size down and reverse the buttons and buttonholes.

Also related to sizing, if you wish to make a longer or shorter cardigan, don't forget to adjust the placement and size of the pockets. You will also have to adjust the number of stitches picked up for the button band, and you may need fewer or more buttons.

PATTERN:

Back:
With smaller needles, cast on 90 (98, 106, 114) sts.

V-neck Shaping:
Next row (RS): K to last 3 sts, K2tog, K1. Continue in St st and dec at neck edge every 4th row 12 (12, 13, 13) times more—27 (31, 34, 38) sts. Work even til piece measures 28 in. or same length as back. Cast off.

Then, on left front, bind off 2 sts in evenly spaced locations for buttonholes. The first buttonhole should be 1 in. above bottom edge, the last buttonhole should be at the start of the V-neck shaping, and the rest should be evenly spaced between. Continue in ribbing for neck and right front. On next row, cast on 2 sts over the cast off sts from the buttonholes on left front. Work 2 more rows in ribbing. Cast off in ribbing.
