Pet Blanket III

Pet Blanket III

Inspired by the first two pet blankets I knitted, I decided to make a third with yet more of my scrap yarn I couldn't get rid of. I had a bunch of different shades of green yarn, green being my favorite color, and I decided to use some of the less-soft yarn to make a pet blanket. I grabbed two skeins of old yarn that felt a bit rough compared to what I like working with, and I decided they'd work well together for a small pet blanket. I didn't want to do stripes or checks; I wanted to do something a little more challenging. It had been a while since I worked a Fair Isle pattern, mostly because I don't particularly like Fair Isle. I thought with two shades relatively close, though, it might turn out well. Based off a picture of a swatch on Eunny Jang's website, I designed the following chart:

Once I began knitting, I discovered that the garter stitch border I'd planned was too big. Fair Isle knitting tends to pull in, and even when adjusting for that, I still couldn't get the border quite right. Then I decided the garter stitch was kind of ugly anyway, and I figured the blanket would look better with a very small stockinette stitch border instead. This is how it looked on the needles after I'd made that change:

And because I know we all like to look at the wrong side of Fair Isle patterns, here is a snapshot of the reverse side of the completed blanket:
