I had one skein of Lion Brand Wool-Ease in a color called paprika; I had used just a few yards of it while working on the infamous fag hat. It was the closest color to burnt orange I could find, with the added bonus that it was slightly more attractive, so I decided to use it to knit a hat in the colors of my alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin. The Longhorns' colors are burnt orange and white, so I decided to knit a burnt orange hat with a white Longhorn (the school mascot, named Bevo) on the front of it. Of course, that failed since I couldn't make Bevo small enough. I redid the chart several times and still wasn't satisfied with the results, so I ripped out the logo and patched the hole. Then I decided I didn't want a hat with a patch on the front of it, even though it was well concealed, and I bought a new skein of yarn in a color closer to the hideous burnt orange used by UT. Then I bought a piece of white felt, cut out a piece of it shaped like the famous logo, and glued it in place. The hat is a plain stockinette hat with a ribbed brim, so if you want a plain hat, this would do very well. You may knit it flat if you wish, but I find it much easier to knit in the round. |
