Cat Ears Hat

Cat Ears Hat

In the late part of 2007, the Electrician told me he thought cat ears hats were cute. I had never quite agreed, but since he was the one calling them cute, I made one to wear in front of him. A year later, I was working in the calendar kiosk in Lakeline Mall, and I happened to wear said cat ears hat one day. SSM saw it and complimented it, and I made the mistake of proudly saying I'd knitted it myself. He stopped dead in his tracks; I thought, 'Oh, shit'; and he asked me to knit one to give to one of his three girlfriends. He wanted it by Christmas Eve. It was then December 22nd. I bought yarn on my way home and spent the next day and a half knitting, getting only three hours' sleep the night before working Christmas Eve in the busiest kiosk in the district. Nevertheless, I got thirty-five dollars for it. I also sneaked a bit of revenge on him for being a creep; I employed a similar tactic I had with the fag hat and stitched "[SSM] sucks" in Morse code around the brim. Instead of using a different color yarn, though, I worked the brim in seed stitch and wrote the words "[SSM] sucks" using purl stitches for the dots and dashes and knit stitches for the spaces in between. Thusly the insult was concealed with several rounds of seed stitch above and below it.

In the November of 2009, I was buying a cappuccino near the shoe store in the mall one morning when, to my horror, SSM approached me. The LARPer had told me SSM was leaving the shoe store, so I had not anticipated seeing him. I was relieved when he merely asked me to make an identical hat for the same girl but in black instead of pink. I did so and repeated the Morse code prank. As my friend Steve observed, it expressed my unique view on customer service.
