I've loved hockey ever since sixth grade, which was when I discovered that I was actually good at it, unlike every other sport. Granted, that probably had less to do with natural talent and more to do with the fact that none of the other girls liked hockey, and I took full advantage of the opportunity to exploit my hockey stick. I remember there was one girl who bullied me habituallynothing too serious, just generic bitchery. Finally, in the middle of a hockey game one day, she crossed the line. I snapped and clocked her with my hockey stick. I hit her so hard I broke the stick. She never came near me again. Best of all, I got away with it: Nobody ever expects the short ones to do anything, which makes sneak attacks that much easier. Looking sweet and innocent means you can get away with murder. In my attic there's a painting of me that ages more horrifically with each passing moment. Anyway, from that moment, I decided I really liked hockey and began watching it on TV, to the mystification of my dad. To this day, when I start watching hockey every fall, he asks when I "suddenly" started liking hockey. *sigh* Being from Houston, I of course root for the Aeros. The Aeros aren't in the NHL, though, so their games aren't televised. On the upside, this means I see them live. Hockey rinks are cold, obviously, plus it's frequently cold out during hockey games, so I always bring a sweater or something with me to games. I'd been meaning to incorporate my love of knitting into my fondness of hockey for a long time, but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the Houston Aeros' logo. The logo is too complex to knit up easily, plus it's notoriously silly anyway, so I just went with the stripes. It's rather Christmasy looking, but what the hell. |
