As probably everyone who knows me or has read any of this site at all knows, I'm keenly interested in left-wing politics. Since my favorite hobby aside from writing is knitting, it made sense to incorporate my interest in politics into my knitting. I really like Senator Obama's logo, so I decided to make a pattern for it. I first designed a large one to put on a sweater, and then I made a miniature one for a hat. After I'd already completed the patterns, it occurred to me that I could have simply Googled it to see if anyone else had already beat me to it. They had. In fact, the patterns I found were almost identical to my own. Oh well. Anyway, since my old roommate Kirston is also into politics and a big fan of Obama, it seemed logical to ask him if he wanted an Obama hat too. Predictably, he said yes. I had actually already made him one hat (a sage ribbed hat), but I figured I'd make him another since I was already making Greg and Ralf hats. Getting started on this hat was a challenge; I had to frog the hat about three times since first I made it too snug, then I fucked up the ribbing, and then I fucked up the logo twice. Eventually, I got the hang of it, though I'm not really satisfied with the way it turned out. There are too few stitches to do the logo justice, but I couldn't make it any bigger and still have it fit on the hat. Oh well. I don't seriously expect Kirston to wear it anyway, but it's the thought that counts. |
