I decided to whip up a simple pair of mittens when I lost my winter gloves and couldn't afford to replace them. My work gloves would not suffice since, apart from the first three fingers being fingerless, they are ventilated (Backstage is a sweaty job.) and thusly useless in cold weather. I would have much preferred to make gloves because I like the individual fingers, but I did not have time. I wanted something warm for my hands on a Saturday night, and I only had about two days to make something, and gloves were a bit more time consuming than I felt I could afford. So I opted instead to make a basic pair of mittens, color bright red since I had an extra skein lying around and thought red mittens would be cute. Anyway, there are many, many mitten patterns out there, most of which have some kind of striping or cabling to make them more interesting. I might make a striped or cabled pair in the future, but I really prefer solid colors. It's somewhat unlikely that I'll make more than a couple of more pairs of mittens because I prefer gloves because of the separate fingers, even though they are more difficult to make. |
