Diagonal Knot Stitch Scarf

I wanted to knit a scarf as a graduation gift for a friend, but it couldn't be just any scarf. Obviously, I wanted it to be extra nice since it was a gift, but it also had to be formal enough to be worn with a suit. I Googled patterns for men's scarves, but most of them sucked. Most were not formal enough or not masculine enough, and my friend is nothing if not masculine. Finally, I found this scarf and decided that was the one. I bought two hanks of Cascade Yarns' Eco Alpaca, a gloriously soft and fuzzy baby alpaca yarn. Regrettably, the pattern did not work with it and needed a worsted weight yarn. Unwilling to hand over a scarf in plain worsted weight and without the beauty and sheer comfort of the baby alpaca yarn, I used the Eco Alpaca yarn to make Brian's scarf instead. I still wanted to make a diagonal knot scarf, though, so I dug some Lion Brand Wool Ease out of my stash. I found many little problems with the original pattern, mostly in its readability (or lack thereof), so I featured it in Bad Knitting and then rewrote it.
