About Me

A lot of this stuff used to be on the FAQ, but I decided that some of the more personal stuff belonged on a separate page, together with more narcissistic details.

Q.  Who are you?

A.  Lauren Cristin Brown.

Q.  What do you do for a living?

A.  I work as a stagehand.

Q.  Where are you from?

A.  I'm from Houston, Texas.  I lived all over—Spring, Alvin, Friendswood, Galveston, Clear Lake, and back to Spring—before moving to Austin (or, more accurately, the suburb of Cedar Park) in the spring of 2000.  I've tried moving back to Houston a couple of times before, but the living arrangements didn't work out and I ended up back in Cedar Park.  I'm hell bent on getting back to Houston and staying, though.

Q.  What kind of education do you have?

A.  I graduated from UT Austin in 2005 with a BS in Radio-Television-Film.  My chosen major aside, I nevertheless prefer theatre work since it was my first love; I took two years of tech theatre in high school.  I would have majored in tech theatre if I could have, but the closest I could come would have involved taking acting classes as well, and I didn't want any part of that.  Also, I think there's a lot more to learn about film in school, whereas theatre I feel is best learned on the job.  Another reason for majoring in film was that there's more sound work in film, and, loving audio as I do, it seemed more appropriate.

Q.  What do you look like?

A.  Look at the pix section.  Duh.

Q.  What does "pix" mean?

A.  Pictures, you ninnyhammer.

Q.  What are your influences in writing?

A.  In no particular order:
authors:  J. D. Salinger, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, James Thurber, Ambrose Bierce, Niccolo Machiavelli, George Ouzounian (a.k.a. Maddox)
TV/movies:  MST3K, Peter Sellers, Laurel and Hardy, the Three Stooges, Mel Brooks, British comedies (especially Red Dwarf)
comics:  Bloom County, the Far Side, Something Positive, Doonesbury, Pogo
. . . and probably a bunch of others I've forgotten.  I won't say "too numerous to list here" because it's the Internet; it's not like I'm wasting ink.  If you're reading this on a piece of paper, disregard the penultimate statement.

Q.  What does "penultimate" mean?

A.  Look it up, smart ass.

Q.  What religion are you?

A.  I'm an atheist.

Q.  So . . . what other hobbies do you have that you don't mention on the site?  Any?

A.  I play piano and would like to learn clarinet but never practice  Occasionally I dabble in terrible abstract painting.  At one point I nearly got into ham radio, but I've lost interest in that.  If I were good at math/science, I'd be a huge physics/chemistry/biology/math/astronomy nerd, but I'm not, so I just read about the subjects and hang around people who do it instead.  Oh, plus I have two cats, who have inspired me to knit small blankets to give to the local animal shelter.
