Why Texas Should Not Secede

I kind of thought the Civil War had cleared this up, but since apparently a considerable percentage of Texans believe otherwise, here it is in all caps:

WE DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO SECEDE FROM THE UNION.

Even if we did, I can think of many, many reasons we would not succeed. Even assuming the rest of the country didn't say "That's a rebellion; send in federal troops," which almost undoubtedly would happen, and in which such a case we would undoubtedly lose, we would never make it. Most of the reasons are financial in nature, all the more relevant due to the current abysmal global economy.

For starters, taxes would skyrocket. We would no longer be able to request federal aid as currently defined. FEMA and other agencies sent us somewhere around four and half billion dollars in the last few years.

While we're talking about government agencies, we'd also have to form our own variants of the FBI (and associated intelligence communities), FDA, CDC, and post office. NASA, which by the way is government operated, would leave Houston, taking billions of dollars and thousands of jobs with it.

We'd also have to come up with new ways of paying for education. The federal government gave out one billion dollars in Pell Grants last year; that wouldn't work anymore.

Fort Hood would pack up and leave Texas, taking more money and jobs with it. Speaking of the military, we would have to form our own Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, etc. There are astronomical costs involved in shelter, supplies, uniforms (which I'm assuming couldn't just be ripped off United States ones), etc.

These are just start up costs. Maintenance, expansion, and improvements would cost even more. All of the above were just financial problems, but there are plenty of other reasons secession wouldn't work.

There are environmental concerns. Texas has four nuclear power plants, and I rather doubt the United States sans Texas would allow us to dump the waste outside of Texas.

Sports franchises would also suffer. American networks would be reluctant to televise these games since ratings in Texas wouldn't count in the U.S. TV revenues are a major reason for the failure of sports teams; just ask Canada. Which reminds me, who would the remaining Texas teams play, anyway? No more NFL, no more NHL—we'd have to start another variant on that.

Then there's national security. That idiotic fence around our southern border would have to extend around all borders since the remaining states wouldn't want illegal immigrants fleeing across the border from the disastrous failures of the new Republic of Texas.

We'd also have to develop our own foreign policies, which, with both Dubya and Rick Perry in this state, means we'll probably alienate everyone and end up at war pretty quickly. Probably with Mexico, since it's only a matter of time till we get annexed by Mexico and have to restore the Alamo (however much that will cost) so we can through the whole damn thing all over again.

In conclusion: What the fuck is wrong with you people?! Do you not read? Do you not pay attention to the news? Do you have no grasp of global economics or politics?

Can't we just fence off Waco and put all the crazies in there?
