Beef Stew


1 1/2 pounds roast beef, cubed
2 tablepoons butter
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic, crushed
1 medium onion, chopped
2 bay leaves
1 tablepoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon pepper
dash allspice or cloves
6 carrots, peeled and chopped
1 bunch celery minus tops, chopped
4 potatoes, chopped
2 tablepoons flour

In large pot, brown meat in 2 tablepoons butter, stirring often. Add 2 cups hot water and next 9 ingredients. Cover, simmer for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Add vegetables and additional 2 cups hot water. Cover and cook 30 to 45 minutes or until vegetables are done. Remove 1 3/4 cups liquid from pot and mix with 2 tablepoon flour in a saucepan to form gravy. Mix with vegetables/meat, cook for three minutes, and serve.
