A dangling modifier is a word or phrase that modifies a word not clearly stated in the sentence. A modifier describes or clarifies a concept. Simply put, a dangling modifier means that the sentence is confusingly worded, as in "I saw a tree walking home." The wording of that sentence seems to suggest that the tree was walking home. That clearly not being the case, the sentence would be better worded, for instance, as "As I was walking home, I saw a tree." People tend not to speak in dangling modifiers; rephrasing is usually quite simple. |
