As I already stated on the Pet Peeves page, only commas and periods belong inside quotation marks unless they are part of the quotation, as in dialog. Also, don't use apostrophes instead of quotation marks. I realize that's the standard in the UK, but not here. Take the fraction of a second it takes to hit shift and put the double marks. Also, don't put quotation marks around common nicknames, bits of humor, technical terms that readers probably know, and trite or well-known expressions. Of course, you may not always wish to use quotation marks where they would otherwise be used. For instance, I don't put quotation marks around my short story titles on the stories page or on the title itself. I do, however, use them when I reference my stories anywhere else. |
